Jai Murcillo

Photography is not just a hobby for me, it is a passion. I have been a professional photographer for 7 picturesque years and decided to stay in Manila as my sanctuary of taking precious memories. My fingers snap at the shutter more on travels, weddings, commercial and fashion shots, I think I am in my greatest element in that environment.

A native of Iloilo and enjoyed my childhood in the City of Sorsogon. My inclination in photography started when I took Basic Photography class under the reputable Federation of Philippine Photographers Foundation (FPPF) on November 2012 and became one of the pioneers of Manila Avid Photographers Club (MAP). One of my notable achievements was when I pocketed the the 2nd Place trophy at the Photo World Cups’s Photographer of the Year and in the year 2018 I was recognized as the Porta Vaga Mall’s Artist of the Month in Baguio City which paved the way to launch my very 1st solo photo exhibit. My passion for the craft grew even more and so I decided to take Fashion Photography at the Institute of Creative Entrepreneurship (ICE).

It is has been my mantra to essentially show my subjects’ best attributes, may it be the serenity of a place, the curves and edges of a person and the interesting features of a non-living organism. For me, there is beauty in ugly.

Story

When I studied basic photography about 6 or 7 years ago, one of our mentors taught us a song entitled “Photography has Taken Me” It was catchy and I can still remember that we were just laughing while singing it as we felt like we’re just singing a song in a classroom back in grade school… Now, I can say that Photography has really taken me big time!!!… It has taken me away from my family and friends, from having a social life and from having that elusive Lovelife (haha!). One of my best friends even unfriended me on Facebook for not having time with her anymore. There might have been not so good things that happened to me in the past, but I am still thankful for discovering my passion as it has also taken me away from isolation since I used to be really shy. It has also taken me away from depression when my loving mother passed away as I got preoccupied… I started with travel photography and eventually became an event and wedding photographer. They say that I am Jack of all trades, master of none but to me, it's all good… I have enjoyed it so much that I got lost along the way… I was able to work with people from different walks of life who made me the person that I am today… It has been a life changing experience for me I must say… In 2018, I have almost given up on photography due to health reason… I was confined in the hospital for almost a month and I was futile for more than 3 months. I thought it was time for me to choose a different path, but I am glad that I thought wrong… Even if photography has already consumed me, I can say that it has also taught me a great deal about life. I have learned that some doors may close but there will always be better and bigger ones that will open for you as long as you continue to hold on your dreams and aspire to be better everyday… Last year, I have decided to study Fashion Photography as it is a genre of photography which has no boundary. I love fashion and arts so this field of photography allows me to enjoy both worlds... With that being said I think that I am lost no more… I know that there’s still so much to learn as this is a huge world to discover and I am excited for whatever it is that will come my way… I am beyond thankful for all the people who have become part of this journey, not everyone is meant to stay but everything happens for a reason… It has been a roller coaster ride and I still don’t know where this will lead me but I will forever be grateful that photography has found me…
